The Association of
Economics Students in Turku is a registered association. It was founded
to continue the activities, operations and traditions of the Student
Union of Turku School of Economics in the new university and the new
student union. As a result of the merging of the universities, an
association to provide economics students with services, looking after
interests and other benefits concerning their field was seen necessary
to be created. The official purpose of the association is to operate as
a link between economics students and to contribute to their societal,
occupational, social and mental tendencies.
There will be altogether ca. 14 000 students in the new joint
student union. This means that the functioning will be in many ways
different than in the current Student Union of Turku School of
Economics, with its 2 000 members. The student union already organizes
a considerable number of activities and services which are the
responsibilities of faculty or subject associations in larger
diversified universities. In larger student unions an individual
student is more prone to identify him/herself with the faculty
association of ones field of study than with the student union itself,
and considers the faculty association more familiar. And this is what
we want to make possible through the Association of Economics Students
in Turku (TuKY ry).
Is it mandatory to join the association?
It is completely voluntary to join the association and you can
resign from it if desired. Most of the student union’s current
functions are sought to be transferred to the association, when only
the members of the association will receive the current and forthcoming
benefits and services. Joining the association does not remove the
obligation to join the student union, since according to Finnish
legislation all students studying for a degree in a Finnish university
must be members of a student union (excluding exchange students, who
can decide whether or not to join a student union).
Why to join the association if I already am a member of the student union?
Already there are benefits directed only to members of the
association. The extent of the benefits will definitely grow during
this spring and the ongoing year. The benefits and services of The
Finnish Association of Business School Graduates (SEFE) will be
available only to members of the association.
Who can join the association?
All students who are registered as attending in Turku School of
Economics or in any of its subunits studying a program or degree of
Economic Sciences, in other words members of the current student union.
How will the operating change from the present?
Part of the present statutory duties of the student union will move
over to the new student union, such as national supervision of the
interests in healthcare, housing and subsistence. The operations of the
Association of Economics Students in Turku will be more outright
directed towards the members and be more perceivable. Supervision of
interests within the Turku School of Economics will be continued and
supervision of interests in economics will be conducted through The
Finnish Association of Business School Graduates (SEFE). Existing
parties and traditions of the student union will be fostered also in
the future.
Who makes the decisions in the association?
In a registered association the highest power of decision is
exercised by its members in general meetings of the association, which
are bi-annually. The elected executive board is responsible for running
day-to-day operations. The board is chosen in the general meeting in
the autumn. The first novel board of the association will be elected in
the fall of 2009.
How to join?
You can join by filling the registration form at http://www.sefe.fi/portal/en/membership/ and
from there through the link under Student membership. The membership
costs 40 euros, but with it you guarantee your membership until
graduation. The form is currently availaible only in Finnish but we are
working on finding a solution for that. You can always ask your tutor
or Finnish friends to help you with the form.
