The Association of Economics Students in Turku is a registered association. It was founded to continue the activities, operations and traditions of the Student Union of Turku School of Economics after a merger with the Student Union of the University of Turku. This merger was a result of the merging of the two respective universities. As the merger was realized, an association to provide economics students with services, looking after interests and other benefits concerning their field was seen necessary to be created. The official purpose of the association is to operate as a link between economics students and to contribute to their societal, occupational, social and mental tendencies.

There are altogether ca. 15 000 students in the new joint student union. This means that the functioning is in many ways different than in the former Student Union of Turku School of Economics, with its 2 000 members. In larger student unions an individual student is more prone to identify him/herself with the faculty association of their field of study than with the student union itself, and considers the faculty association more familiar. This is what we want to make possible through the Association of Economics Students in Turku (TuKY ry).

Do I have to join the association?

It is completely voluntary to join the association and you can resign from it if desired. Most of the former student union’s current functions have been transferred to the association. This means that only the members of the association will receive any and all the benefits and services provided. If you are studying for a degree in a Finnish university (as a regular student) joining the association does not remove the obligation to join the student union, since according to Finnish legislation all students studying for a degree in a Finnish university must be members of a student union. Exchange students can decide whether or not to join a student union.

Why to join the association if I already am a member of the student union?

Already there are benefits directed only to members of the association. The extent of the benefits will definitely grow during this spring and the ongoing year. The benefits and services of The Finnish Association of Business School Graduates (SEFE) will be available only to members of the association.

Who can join the association?

All students who are registered as attending in Turku School of Economics or in any of its subunits studying a program or degree of Economic Sciences.

What has changed since the time of the Student Union of Turku School of Economics?

Part of the former statutory duties of the student union have moved over to the new student union, such as national supervision of the interests in healthcare, housing and subsistence. The operations of the Association of Economics Students in Turku is more outright directed towards the members and be more perceivable. Supervision of interests within the Turku School of Economics continues and supervision of interests in economics is conducted through The Finnish Association of Business School Graduates (SEFE). Existing parties and traditions of the student union are greatly valued and fostered also in the Association of Economics Students in Turku.

Who makes the decisions in the association?

In a registered association the highest power of decision is exercised by its members in general meetings of the association, which are bi-annually. The elected executive board is responsible for running day-to-day operations. The board is chosen in the general meeting in the autumn. The first novel board of the association was elected in the fall of 2009 and the next will be selected in the autumn of 2010.

How to join?

You can join by filling the registration form at http://www.sefe.fi/portal/en/membership/ and from there through the link under Student membership. The membership costs 40 euros, but with it you guarantee your membership until graduation. If you need any help with filling the form, please ask your Finnish friends or your tutor to help you out.
